Help me correct my mistakes, grammatical and others........?

The story “The Lesson” takes place during a period when black people were living separately from white folks. Black people were characterized as minorities, and they were called by their first names; As Sylvia says about Miss Moore "the only woman on the block with no first name" and "black as hell, 'cept for her feet, which were fish-white and spooky." Very few black folks were educated and did not have lot of money. Sylvia and her friends are very underprivileged, only one of them has a desk at home. Miss Moore wants to teach them the reality about the world, the other part of the world that they do not know exits. Once they see how the wealthy people live, some of them immediately want to be part of it, for example Mercedes says, " I'd like to go back there when I get my birthday money" (Bambera). Even Sylvia who is though, and not the kind of person who will take time to think about anything that Miss Moore has to teach, wants to change. She says, “I'm going to the West End and then over to the Drive to think this day through” (Bambera).
