Will welding a muffler to a stock exhaust pipe change the sound?

I dont really wnat to spend the money on a system so i was thinking just to by a muffler and and weld it onto the stock exhaust pipe. do all this after cutting the stock off of course. will this change the sound at all? I want it to sound deeper and pure.
